7 Wildfire Preparedness Tips Every Homeowner Should Know

Blog Issue #54 - Wildfire - 1

Wildfires can develop quickly and spread with little warning. While no one can eliminate the risk entirely, taking a few of these proactive wildfire preparedness tips can help protect your family, home, and property.

Wildfire Preparedness Tips for Homeowners

1. Create a Family Evacuation Plan

Don’t wait until a wildfire is approaching to decide what you’ll do. Identify multiple evacuation routes, establish a family meeting location, and make sure everyone knows how to communicate if separated. Be sure to include plans for pets and family members with special needs.

2. Build an Emergency Supply Kit

A well-stocked emergency kit can make a significant difference during an evacuation. Include:

  • Water and nonperishable food
  • Prescription medications
  • First aid supplies
  • Flashlights and extra batteries
  • Important documents
  • Cell phone chargers and backup power sources

Keep your kit in an easily accessible location.

3. Create Defensible Space Around Your Home

One of the most effective ways to reduce wildfire risk is to create a buffer zone between your home and surrounding vegetation. Remove dead plants, dry leaves, pine needles, and other combustible materials from around structures.

4. Maintain Your Property Year-Round

Routine maintenance can help prevent embers from igniting your home. Consider these simple tasks:

  • Clean gutters and roofs regularly
  • Trim overhanging tree branches
  • Mow tall grass and weeds
  • Move firewood and other flammable materials away from buildings

5. Stay Informed During Fire Season

Sign up for local emergency alerts and monitor weather conditions during periods of increased wildfire risk. Having multiple ways to receive warnings can help you respond quickly when conditions change.

6. Evacuate Early When Ordered

If local authorities issue an evacuation order, leave immediately. Waiting until the last minute can increase danger for your family and create additional challenges for emergency responders.

7. Work Together as a Community

Wildfire preparedness is most effective when neighborhoods work together. Encourage neighbors to reduce fire hazards, share emergency information, and support community preparedness efforts.

Preparation Starts Before the Smoke Appears

Wildfires are unpredictable, but preparation doesn’t have to be. By developing a plan, maintaining your property, and staying informed, you can improve your readiness and help protect what matters most.
