ISO 45001 Key Updates Expected March 2027

Across many industries that are ISO-accredited, a critical safety gap is coming into focus.

Burnout. Fatigue. Chronic stress.

These psychosocial hazards directly affect attention, reaction time, and decision making. When they go unmanaged, the risk of errors, near misses, and serious incidents rises sharply. Yet most Occupational Health and Safety systems were designed to control physical hazards. Even when organizations operate under strong frameworks like ISO 45001, these human risk factors often remain invisible.

When incidents occur, investigations focus on equipment, procedures, and environment. Workload, fatigue, and psychological strain are rarely examined. As a result, organizations may identify what happened but miss the deeper causes that allow incidents to occur.

Global safety standards are now evolving to close this gap. ISO 45003 is the international standard for Psychological Health and Safety. It helps organizations identify, assess, and manage psychosocial hazards alongside their existing ISO 45001 safety systems.

ISO 45001 will be requiring that PHS risks are reviewed and addressed in the upcoming 2027 ISO standard. Forward looking organizations are already moving to address this risk.
