NFPA 70E: Contact Release Annual Training
Certificate Information
NFPA 70E: Contact Release Annual Training Pilot Study Description
The NFPA 70E: Contact Release Annual Training Pilot Study is used to evaluate if NASP has met the learning objectives we set out to achieve. It is of utmost importance that you take this course in its entirety in the Learning Management System (LMS) and refrain from “clicking through slides.” Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and the hours associated with them are meant to reflect the average time to complete the course by a student learning the topic for the first time. Even though you may already be familiar with portions of the material, you must read the content word-for-word so that we can use your timed results as part of our evaluation.
You must document the time (number of minutes) that it takes for you to complete the course, including each course section, each review game, and the final exam on the Pilot Study-Individual Student Calculation Worksheet. The worksheet and instructions will be provided to you upon course enrollment. The worksheet results will be combined with those of other pilot study participants to determine the final CEUs to be awarded for the course studied. Participants will receive CEUs for completing the Pilot Course once the CEU value has been determined.
Additionally, your feedback is what makes this Pilot Study work; we ask that you please complete the Course Review Survey found at the end of the course and provide thorough answers. We thank you for taking the time to complete this study! Because of individuals like you, we can continually create and improve the products that thousands of professionals rely on.
You must complete the Pilot Course and Pilot Study-Individual Student Calculation Worksheet by Friday, April 24, 2026.
Please DO NOT register for this course if you cannot meet the deadline.
Description
The NFPA 70E: Contact Release Annual Training course is designed for qualified persons, safety standbys, maintenance personnel, electricians, and any employees who work on or near energized electrical equipment. This course provides critical training on recognizing electrical shock incidents, safely performing contact release, and delivering immediate life-saving medical care.
This training supports compliance with NFPA 70E Article 110 (General Requirements for Electrical Safety-Related Work Practices), which requires annual training for employees exposed to electrical hazards, including instruction in methods of releasing victims from contact with energized conductors and emergency response procedures such as First Aid, CPR, and AED use.
Electrical shock incidents are time-critical events where the first few seconds determine survival outcomes. Participants will learn how to properly assess an energized scene, avoid becoming secondary victims, de-energize equipment safely, use insulated rescue tools, and administer appropriate post-release medical care.
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to:
- Define contact release and explain when it is required
- Recognize signs of active electrical current flow in a victim
- Identify electrical shock hazards, including arc flash, arc blast, and step potential
- Explain the physiological effects of electrical current on the human body, including the “let-go” threshold and ventricular fibrillation
- Apply the “Stop, Look, Assess” method during the first critical seconds of an electrical emergency
- Distinguish between de-energization and insulated rescue methods and determine the safest response
- Demonstrate proper emergency shutdown procedures while minimizing arc flash exposure
- Select and inspect appropriate shock protection PPE and insulated rescue tools
- Execute safe contact release techniques using nonconductive tools
- Identify environmental hazards such as water, confined spaces, and elevated work areas
- Apply correct procedures for post-release medical care, including scene reassessment
- Recognize the requirement for mandatory medical evaluation following any electrical shock
- Apply lessons learned from real-world case studies to prevent secondary victim incidents
