Integrated Safety Management Course

Graduates who have attained their Master Safety Administrator (MSA) certification, completed the Advanced Safety Manager Independent Study course and completed the Integrated Safety Management Course are certified as a Licensed Safety Professional (LSP) and a Certified Safety Consultant (CSC). Others are Certified as an Integrated Safety Management Technician (IST).

Integrated Safety Management

This is an intensive independent study course that gives you a comprehensive understanding of workplace safety and teaches you how to manage safety in your workplace. This course discusses all of the primary facets of workplace safety and how they interrelate. Included is the latest advancement in workplace safety - Behavior Based Safety. Behavior Based Safety is based upon the proven principles of Organizational Behavior Management.

This course will teach you how to manage the comprehensive safety functions in your workplace that will lead to the establishment of a true safety culture in your workforce. Topics include everything from the expected "Regulatory Compliance" to today's news headlines "Disaster Recovery" to the cutting edge of Workplace Safety, "Behavior Based Safety".

Introduction

In the Introduction of the course you will begin by learning the true scope of the workplace safety problem. You will be shocked by the presentation of the actual experience of workplace deaths, injuries and illnesses and why the BLS statistics, that many of us depend on, seriously understate the extent of the problem.

You will learn the three paradigms of workplace safety and how to utilize each to help you achieve a safe workplace. You will learn the eight guiding principles of a safe workplace and how to employ them as an aid to achieving a workplace safety culture.

Behavior Based Safety

In the Behavior Based Safety section of the course you will learn about the research and science behind Organizational Behavior Management from which Behavior Based Safety was developed. You will understand the principles, the terminology and the application of Behavior Based Safety.

You will learn about the relationships between the worker and the workplace and how to mold these relationships to improve knowledge, skills, motives, and attitudes, resulting in a true safety culture.

You will gain the skills necessary to make an initial assessment of your workplace to determine your site specific application of Behavior Based Safety and to make periodic assessments to monitor your success.

You will come to understand the impact of behavior upon safety including at-risk behaviors, supervision and behavior, communication and behavior, how memories affect behavior, the effects of peer pressure, accountability, activators, consequences, and motivation.

You will learn how to apply the principles of Behavior Based Safety and how to win the support of employees and management. Topics include worker adapted safety programs, observation, focus behaviors, attitudes, perceptions, self-directed behavior, critical behaviors, antecedents, feedback, coaching, barriers, targeted behaviors, incentives and rewards, working committees, and measuring success.

Regulatory Compliance

The Regulatory Compliance section of the course offers an eye opening overview of what regulatory compliance is and what it is not. You will explore OSHA, EPA, DOT and other regulatory agencies with an eye toward ensuring your regulatory compliance and coordinating your regulatory compliance with the other facets of your Integrated Safety Management System.

Plans, Programs, Policies, and Procedures

The Plans, Programs, Policies, and Procedures portion of the course explains the various regulatory requirements for plans, programs, policies, and procedures and discusses their proper development. It also delves into methods to merge similar plans. The course discusses the organization of the needed plans, programs, policies, and procedures and how to mesh them into your Integrated Safety Management System.

Safety Audits

The Safety Audits section provides an in depth study of the various means of analyzing your workplace in order to discover all hazards and potential hazards. This section begins with an explanation of hazard analysis including job hazard analysis, change analysis, process hazard analysis, phase hazard analysis, and the hierarchy of hazard controls. Safety audits continues with workplace safety inspections including planning, reporting, and monitoring of inspections for hazards and potential hazards. The third part of safety audits, accident investigation, then covers collecting data, analyzing data, root cause analysis, judgments of need, and reporting the results.

OSHA VPP Program

The course also discusses the OSHA VPP Program including its advantages and disadvantages as well as how to prepare yourself if you decide to join the VPP.

Safety Training

The Safety Training portion of the course shows you how to get the maximum benefit from your training time. You will learn how to double the retention rate for the information you present and how to maintain an exciting and appealing atmosphere in your classroom. Topics in this section include how adults learn; designing training for adults; from boredom to excitement; effective communications; handling problem students; and computer based presentations.

Incident Command System

The Incident Command System section of the class explains the use of the National Incident Management System mandated by FEMA. You will learn how to use the Incident Command System to coordinate your response and resources with those of local, state, and federal governments and how to incorporate the ICS into your Integrated Management System.

Disaster Recovery

In the Disaster Recovery portion of the course you will learn how to help your company recover from both natural and manmade disasters. Topics will include planning, information systems, critical operations, personnel, government assistance, natural disasters, and terrorism.

Workers’ Compensation

The course includes a section on Workers’ Compensation that is designed to help you save money on the cost of your Workers’ Compensation insurance. This section will help you understand Workers’ Compensation laws, reduce costs, and avoid fraud.

Liability Minimization

The Liability Minimization portion of the course includes discussion of both civil and criminal liability for you, your management, and your company. It covers landmark precedent setting cases that apply to both civil suits and criminal prosecutions. You will learn how to protect yourself from civil and criminal liability.

Outside Expertise

The Outside Expertise section of the course discusses the use of consultants in your facility. It covers when and why to use consultants and when not to. This section discusses consultant qualifications and fees and how to choose a consultant.

Off The Job Safety

The Off The Job Safety portion of the class covers the importance to employee satisfaction of “value added” training designed to help them and their families remain safe while away from the workplace. This section includes the discussion of the use of such topics as home safety, travel safety, CPR, 1st Aid, and fire extinguishers.
